This is the RowGen control language (RCL) metadata file defining the data generation.<\/p>\n<p>You can later modify, schedule, and run this job from the GUI, or on the command line.<\/p>\n<p>Select the Create Script radio button. Click Next.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Test-Data-Options.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-9673 size-medium\" title=\"Test Data Options\" src=\"http:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Test-Data-Options-300x264.jpg\" alt=\"Test Data Options\" width=\"300\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/beta.iri.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Test-Data-Options-300x264.jpg 300w, https:\/\/beta.iri.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Test-Data-Options.jpg 522w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;\">Step 2:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: italic;\"><span style=\"font-style: italic;\"><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Define the Target Size<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>In the Test Data Definition Screen, click <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Test Data Options <\/span>to change the <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Incollect <\/span>value (which specifies the number of rows to generate in your target), and define the fields.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;\">Step 3:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: italic;\"><span style=\"font-style: italic;\"><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Define the Test Field Generation<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>By default, RowGen will generate random values for the data type specified for each field (the default is ALPHA_DIGIT). However, in each field, you can also specify random selection from a range of values specified directly in the script, or from real data in a (ASCII, tab-delimited) set file you select or create in the GUI\u2019s Set File wizards.<\/p>\n<p>To define the fields, you must use or create a new data definition file (DDF) layout. Select from:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Add Existing Metadata, to use a DDF from CoSort\/SortCL, NextForm, or FieldShield jobs.<\/li>\n<li>Discover Metadata, to auto-create and use a DDF file from an existing file or table.<\/li>\n<li>Convert Metadata, to turn a supported metadata file (e.g., COBOL copybook) into a DDF.<\/li>\n<li>Field Layout, to open a tabular editing window where you create each field attribute individually \u2026 which we will do in this case to show how fields are defined anew.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a title=\"Using the RowGen Test Data Job Wizard - Chaitali Mitra 0.jpg\" href=\"http:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Using-the-RowGen-Test-Data-Job-Wizard-Chaitali-Mitra-0.jpg\" rel=\"prettyPhoto\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"width: 518px; height: 436px;\" title=\"Test Data Definition\" src=\"http:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/t_Using-the-RowGen-Test-Data-Job-Wizard-Chaitali-Mitra-0.jpg\" alt=\"Test Data Definition\" width=\"624\" height=\"525\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Add a field by right-clicking in the table. The <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Generation Field<\/span> editor opens to the Layout tab, with FIELD1 as the default field name and ALPHA_DIGIT data type, which you can change. Random values will be generated for this field, for which you must define a size or separator. Click on the ? button for help content to review the many other field-specific layout attributes.<\/p>\n<p>To randomly select field data instead, start the same way; i.e., right-click to add or edit an input field. In the <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Generation Field<\/span> dialog, review the field <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Layout <\/span>attributes, but move into the <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Value <\/span>tab. From the Transformation Type menu, select Set: File and browse to a .set file you have.<\/p>\n<p>If you do not have a set file, click Define, and in the Set File Selection dialog, click Create. Then choose a mini-wizard option to define a set file from: 1) connected DB column values; 2) a range of (or literal) values; or, 3) custom-formatted compound data values you build in pieces.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Field-Layout-Editor.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9674 \" title=\"Field Layout-Editor\" src=\"http:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Field-Layout-Editor.jpg\" alt=\"Field Layout-Editor\" width=\"556\" height=\"343\" srcset=\"https:\/\/beta.iri.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Field-Layout-Editor.jpg 950w, https:\/\/beta.iri.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Field-Layout-Editor-300x185.jpg 300w, https:\/\/beta.iri.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Field-Layout-Editor-768x474.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 556px) 100vw, 556px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;\">Step 4:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: italic;\"><span style=\"font-style: italic;\"><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Define and Review the Target Layout<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Use the <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Data Targets<\/span> dialog to define output layout(s). While many people just re-use their input layout, you can define one or more targets in the same or different format. You can modify the job in the editor window (or any text editor) directly, through the outline view (right-click on the elements), or in dialogs launched from the IRI menu exposed from a right-click in the editor.<\/p>\n<p>To run the job script and produce the test data, right-click on the job in the project explorer, or in the script window, and select Run As &gt; IRI Job. You can also select the Run As option from the toolbar\u2019s green play (run) menu.<\/p>\n<p>The job can also run from the Workbench\u2019s built-in task <a style=\"color: #1155cc; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.iri.com\/blog\/iri\/iri-workbench\/scheduling-jobs-in-iri-workbench\/\">scheduler<\/a>. <span style=\"background-color: #ffffff; color: #111111;\">The scheduler configures timed launch of any tasks defined and saves as a Workbench or external tool run configuration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The screenshot below of the upper window in IRI Workbench displays the top (generation) section of the job script.
